Sunlight reflection methods (SRM) – also known as solar geoengineering or solar radiation modification – are a set of ideas to reflect a small fraction of incoming sunlight to reduce global temperatures. There are several ideas, including marine cloud brightening and stratospheric aerosol injection.. The proportion of sunlight that’s reflected vs. absorbed, the re-radiation of heat, and the intensity of the greenhouse effect influence the amount of energy in the Earth system and global processes such as the water cycle and atmospheric and ocean circulation.

3 The component analysis of Earth’s reflected energy The main components of Earth’s reflected sunlight are analysed in this study using the simple radiative transfer model of Stephens et al. [5] that has a number of similarities to that introduced earlier by Donohoe & Battisti [37].. Solar radiation can either be reflected or absorbed when it hits the earth. If it is absorbed, it heats up the planet. If it is reflected back into space, it does not. Therefore, the surface property of “reflectivity” presents an important opportunity to reduce the amount of solar energy heating up the earth.
