Christmas is just less than a week! Wow, how time flies! With all the things that had happened this year, the pandemic and natural calamities, plus busyness at work and of course some personal things, these really made time come so swiftly. So I just recently started doing Christmas décors for our home. I made these burlap and canvas ribbons to decorate our little Christmas tree and possibly can be used for other occasions and I totally love it! 🎄😍 Would love to share how I made these and maybe you’d like to try it out 👍🏻 Let’s start!

Materials

  • 6.5 x 2 inches Burlap/Jute fabric ribbon (you get the ribbon spool or cut it yourself, which I did)
  • 6.5 x 2 inches Duck canvas fabric (some stores call it Oxford) ribbon (you get the ribbon spool or cut it yourself, which I did)
  • 4 inch ribbon
  • 12 inch jute twine
  • Scissors (A big and small one would be great)
  • Ruler
  • Marker
  • Needle and pins
  • Thread (with the same color of your ribbon is recommended)

Here’s a video on how to make them

Steps

    1. Gather your materials. Cut your fabrics in 6.5 x 2 strips with your big scissors, since these fabric are thick and from. I chose burlap and duck canvas because it’s sturdy enough for them to be in place when decorating.
Note: Burlap fiber easily fray and fall, you may want use gloves and face mask (may be useful also to lessen the smell) if you’ll be doing a lot. My nose is really sensitive with dust and chemicals, maybe we’re in the same place so it’s good to be prepared 😃
    2. You may start with either fabric, in this tutorial I started with burlap. Lie your fabric flat and make center fold as a marker. Then fold it in 3 parts. While holding the center, gently pull out the ends downwards. You may pull it out more slowly to make a longer tail for your ribbon.Step 2: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    3. Flip your fabric, so the the tail will be at the back. Then fold the center vertically. Then make another vertical fold at the top and bottom. This now have 3 folds.Step 3: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily HandcraftedStep 3b: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily HandcraftedStep 3c: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    4. Secure the folds with a pin. You may add another pin since jute fabric is loosely woven and doesn’t easily fold. Get your crochet lace ribbon and wrap in the center and maintain the folds. You may remove your pins when you’ve set your ribbon in place.Step 4: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    5. Sew your ribbon at the back using 2 strands of strands. I did a simple hem and running stitch to secure the ribbon in place. I really like crochet lace ribbons because it gives a nice texture.Step 5: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    6. You may carefully cut visible fray using small scissors. I wouldn’t suggest to pull the fray as it may lead to more frays. If you use the ribbons in spools frays will be not be a problem since the edges are sealed.Step 6: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    7. You’re now done with your first ribbon bow! Yey!! 🤩Step 7: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    8. Let’s now do the canvas ribbon. Cut your fabric with same measurements of the burlap ribbon.
    9. It’s pretty much the same folds as we did earlier. The only difference is that the center vertical fold is in the opposite side. You can see the fold line in the center here. Make folds at the top and bottom too. I use both fold techniques alternately for my ribbons 👍Step 9: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily HandcraftedStep 9b: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted
    10. Now, let’s get our jute twine. Just wrap it around the center to secure the folds. When you reach the end, just slip the tip inside the wrapping. You may do cleaning in the edges and your canvas ribbon bow is done! 😊Step 10: Easy DIY Burlap and Canvas Ribbon Bows - Heartily Handcrafted

Congrats on making your ribbon bows! 🎊 Go ahead and do more! I really love how simple yet stylish it is! Especially, it gives that rustic feel 💖 Hope this was helpful to you! Since these will be used as Christmas tree hangings I originally intended to add some glitter but its simplicity is already really pretty, which I think it can also be used in other occasions or function. Here are more images of these pretty ribbons, I really enjoyed taking photos 😍
